It’s good to see that schemes by the government might actually be having an affect. It was released last week (some of you may have seen it in last week’s Ham&High) that children in the borough of Camden are more likely to walk to school than children in other areas of north London.

National campaigns like walk to school month last October may have had an affect on this, and if that is the case, then fantastic! It’s good to see that such initiatives are actually working. On the other end of the scale however, it’s interesting to see that despite National Bike Week, less than 1% of children in north London boroughs travel to school by bike.

The number of children walking to school across north London is generally impressive. The majority of boroughs are above 50% (with the exception of Barnet which is at a very low 35.6%. I’m sure there’s a logically reason behind that…) and Camden borough comes in at the highest with 61.8% of children walking to school and only 7.8% travelling to school by car.

I’m sure we could theorise many reasons why the statistics are so good for Camden (the rest of the children come under car-sharing or public transport (28.9%)) but maybe it’s as simple as the majority of schools being within walking distance, or maybe walk to school month actually made a real difference. I’m putting it down to areas like Hampstead having the nicest scenery. But maybe I’m bias…
