Council Declines Application to Demolish Athlone House

Hampstead's Athlone House has been saved from the wrecking ball.

Considered by many as one of the finest example of Victorian Flemish architecture around Hampstead Heath, Camden Council have denied permission for the mansion to be demolished to make way for another to be built in it's place.

English Heritage refused to list the building which was the main reason it came under threat, but hundreds of local residents protested the proposed works and the council seem to have listened.

Their given reason was the work would be 'too big and would infringe on the equivalent of the green belt known as the Metropolitan Open Land'. (Quote taken from the Camden New Journal)

I have to say this lot are probably going to be happy!

Whilst writing this, I've realise there's a severe lack of any photos of Athlone House so I'm heading down there today to get some photos and see what all the fuss is about! Pop back this evening to take a look!
