Camden Votes Yes for AV But the Country Moves On

So the Alternative Vote result was a massive disappointment for many people. Country-wide, the vote to remain with the first past the post system won with a convincing 67.9%.

The result is unsurprising considering the general consensus in the days running up to May 5th.. The Alternative Vote seemed a logical step to many people, especially Camden's 'Yes!' campaign which gained an awful lot of momentum in the weeks approaching the vote, hence the surprise that the general public did not warm to the idea.

Despite the country-wide disappointment, Camden's 'Yes!' campaign can walk away with their heads held-high with a majority vote. 51.4% of Camden's voters called for a change in the English electoral system. A close call, and sadly inconsequential in the greater scheme of things. It doesn't matter how good the 'Yes!' campaign was in Camden. It appears that nation-wide, the no camp did a better job in persuading people.

So British politics continues as it was. Nick Clegg has said that he shall be saying no more about the referendum: 'You just have to accept it and move on'. Many politicians have suggested that this has secured first past the post as our method of election for the next couple of decades at least. We must accept it, else move to Switzerland.

Thank you Kirjava! And I agree with your reasoning... But we should move on... Or move away! America anyone? I hear they have a fair system there...

It's perfectly possible for there to be disappointed people all over the country as a result, hence 'country-wide'!

The result is a combination of the No campaign being better-funded and telling outright lies, the Yes campaign failing to reach out to anyone beyond a relatively small circle of media-savvy liberals and the British people being general tards.

If only 32.1% voted for AV then it couldn't have been a disappointment country-wide as the majority of people voted 'No'...
