Of course when we go to the hospital we expect the hygiene standards to be at their peak. Yet you can't always guarantee this, and that's where the PEAT comes in.

PEAT stands for the Patient Environment Action Team and they are responsible for carrying out unannounced assessments on hospitals. For the past three years, Royal Free has achieved a rating of 'good' for environment and cleanliness and 'excellent' for the quality of food. Once again this year, they have achieved the same results.

Jeremy Sharp, the director of facilities gave the following statement: 'The results are a deserved boost to our domestic services team who worked exceptionally hard over the past year while the trust undertook refurbishment work.' The domestic services team were having to work around the extensive refurbishment work that I think we've all been aware of, including a new front entrance.

In response to this result, the Royal Free have also pointed out that they do not just rely on this assessment to judge their cleanliness. They also invite members of the public to undertake mock assessments throughout the year. Should you be interested, contact Jeremy Sharp at jeremy.sharp1@nhs.net.
