Hampstead Heath Ponds To Close?
By Simon__Lee | Sunday, January 23, 2011, 12:02
Sad news has emerged this week that Hampstead’s swimming ponds are to be closed for essential work. The reason being is an issue with the dams that create the ponds. According to the Ham&High, if the dams were to burst, which could happen to excess rainfall, then areas such as Gospel Oak, Kentish Town and Darmouth Park would be under threat from severe flooding. The risk is low, but were it to happen, the consequences would be disastrous.

The swimming ponds are a little chilly at this time of year...
Sadly, the aesthetic of the ponds will be affected by the work, but Michael Welbank, chairman of the City of London Heath management committee has assured that after ten years, it will be as if nothing had happened (other than of course the fact that the ponds will no longer be in danger of flooding!)
It has not been confirmed yet whether the swimming ponds will definitely close or not, but with work happening on them, I’m sure we can expect closure for at least a short time. Here’s hoping that it’s during the winter…
The work is said to take two or three years, however the work is unlikely to start before 2013, which gives us at least another two summers to enjoy the ponds! Let’s just hope for some sunshine this year!

'oh I hope they don't close for too long! The ladies' pond is a sanctuary, an oasis -... I feel reborn after a swim there in the summer...

ReportOf course, the whole thing is a worse case scenario. It's highly unlikely that Hampstead will be hit by tropical storms, but I guess we don't want Kentish Town to end up underwater. It'd make gigs at the Forum a little difficult...

ReportIve had many a refreshing swim in the ponds! Theres no better way to spend the summer than a nice dip!! The closure would be awful! Might be forced to go paddle in white stone pond.....Cant be people of kentish town learn to live with an under water life?

Reporti think the most poignant message conveyed in this post is the prophesised 'excessive rainfall' and 'flooding. not just the beginning of the end of the heath eh! but while there's still a sun in the sky i'd love to carry on enjoying swimming in the ponds, the Lido just isn't the same nature embracing experience! :)
