It is a good question and the answer depends on what you want of a night...on a nice summers evening, a walk in the heath culminating with a cold pimms can be enjoyed at the spainards inn. Alternatively for a crowd of reasonably good looking 20-30 somethings, head to the freemasons. It is definetly worth further exploration down the hill to belsize park.
The Duke of Hamilton serves, and has done for years, the very best beer in Hampstead thanks to 'Woody' the landlord.
The Rosslyn Arms used to be a good pub for those who were not to be intimidated.....sadly it has changed.
The Holly Bush is a delight, and The Freemasons can be recommended on several different levels. Big Garden for kids, skittle alley in the basement and good food. The real beer though seems sometimes unavailable.
Elsewhere try The Stag, another garden pub with a good wine selection and lovely staff.
Its been a long strange trip since it was a fairly rough pub selling just beer with Joe and Albert and the Landlady asking couples...'Are you married or do you live in Hampstead.'
