Hampstead's New End Theatre to Close

Hampstead has always been respects for it's art galleries and theatres, and it was shockingly announced today that one of it's longest running, the New End Theatre, will be closing it's doors after 37 years.
The news comes after a difficult year for the theatre, and they have been struggling to keep up with their costs. Brian Daniels, Artistic Director of the venue, was of course disappointed by the turn of events. He was unavailable for comment today as he's away, but spoke to the Ham&High before the announcement.
Leonie Scott-Matthews, owner and artistic director of Hampstead's other fringe theatre, Pentameters, was involved in getting the New End Theatre off of the ground back when it started in the 70s and so understandably is saddened by the news. 'I wish Brian well, they've done a lot of good work over the years. But it's always tricky when it comes to the financial side of theatre, as I always say, I started Pantameters Theatre with a pound and I've still got that pound.'
Brian Daniels has stated that he intends to relocate the theatre, though with the cost of Hampstead being the reason for moving in the first place, it would not be surprising if the move took the theatre out of Hampstead. The theatre closes this Sunday (28th August). Here's hoping that it sticks around in one form or another...
