Hampstead Rugby Club Juniors Urges Schools to Get Involved

Now in its second year of running, the Junior section of Hampstead Rugby Football Club regularly sees over 80 boys and girls aged 7 years to 16 years attending their training sessions on the Heath every Saturday morning. Managed by Simon Taylor, Chairman Hampstead RFC, and with the support and help of the RFU an enthusiastic team of volunteers, qualified coaches and ex-players including Sean, Ella, Kike, Andrew, Rob, Alex, Sumo and Hannah give the children mentorship and guidance and ensures that they are learning not only rugby skills but also team building, discipline and self control and at the same time having lots of fun.

Thanks to Camden Council, the team are now expanding their facilities at their training area with junior pitches being marked out on the Heath, and use of nearby facilitates for changing and beverages. Nurtured on by their success of winning Middlesex U11s Festival Championship last season, with a BaBa team with Pinner and Grammarians and Kilburn Cosmos RFC clubs and coming runner up in the Marie Curie Middlesex U9s Rugby Festival, the club is regularly playing matches every third week with other local clubs. Meanwhile the U16s are this year participating in the Saracens Herts Middlesex Junior League.
The Junior Section is actively engaging local schools to further increase participation, particularly in the Yr 7-9 (U12-U14) age rage. If any parents would like to bring their child down to try out, they are welcome to come down to the North Side of the Parliament Hill Running Track on the Heath on a Saturday morning 10.30 - 12.00 with boots and mouth guard. The club is also looking for more volunteers to be involved in the coaching and would be welcome for any help.

Everyone should play rugby in school. Much better than football. Teaches sporting behaviour and respect for the opposition, and most importantly, the ref. Don't see much of that in football nowdays...
