Hampstead and Camden are Third Most Expensive Place to Rent

The charity Shelter have released national statistics concerning the average rent in England and the affordability for local residents.
Most are aware that to rent in Hampstead will set you back a rather large proportion of your pay-packet. Yet, the borough of Camden comes within the most expensive 8% of the entire country, with the average rent for a two bedroom property coming in at over £1000 a month. Needless to say, £1000 a month for a two bedroom property in Hampstead would be a bargain, and when you look a little closer, the truth becomes clear.
The borough of Camden (and needless to say Hampstead is well above the average for the borough) is, on average, actually the third most expensive place to rent in the entire country. The average rent in the borough of Camden is £1,876 a month, and as a proportion of income, the damage is about 77% of the average monthly income.
So the overview is that Camden is one of the most unaffordable places to live in the whole of the country. Yet how come it's well populated and many of us still head out at the week-ends and enjoy ourselves?
From your experience, are these figures accurate? Do you find it a struggle to live in Hampstead and the surrounding area? Or are you quite comfortable with your current set-up?
Comments
Not surprising figures really, though the 77% of income spent of rent doesn't seem quite right. I live in the borough of Camden, and only spend about 50% of my income on rent. It's still a lot, but not as much as this survey would imply!
