Fate of Hampstead Heath Library Decided by Camden Cabinet

Three proposals were presented to the Camden Cabinet on Wednesday that would decide the fate of Camden's libraries, including Heath Library.
-
The number of library books available at Heath library will be reduced...
As seen in our previous article, the first two proposals involved the reduction of the services provided by many of the borough's libraries, whilst the final proposal was the generally anticipated closure of many of the libraries.
Good news for for many a library fan is that the Cabinet went for proposal A. This proposal involves the following changes which will take effect over the next two years...
- Working with the community to explore alternative delivery models for the services provided by Belsize, Chalk Farm and Heath libraries
- All other libraries to reduce their opening hours by 10%
- Reduction in stock
- Reduction in staff
- Increased charges
- Fewer activites
Heath library (and Chalk Farm and Belsize) will be run until 2012. Until then, the council is accepting proposals from organisations as to how they would like to use the space from then. The hope is, of course, that a community organisation will take over the running of the library from 2012.
